Bucky Lawson tells up about a song that begins with a Russian soldier on the morning of 22 June 1941, when Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa.
TagTank Week
Years ago, Discovery started Shark Week. Sharknados aside, we have nothing against sharks. We just like tanks and AFVs better.
We’re all interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles, from the earliest incarnations of H.G. Wells’ “Land Ironclad” to the most current Main Battle Tank.
⏩ Skip the intro. Let me read the articles.
Hence, Tank Week.
We read up on the history and are interested in how tank armor holds up in Mosul, Raqqa, and Marawi. We play World of Tanks, watch movies about AFVs, and enjoy armored vehicle-related fiction, from Buettner’s Overkill to (duh) Hammer’s Slammers.
It seems only reasonable that we dedicate a week or so to armored fighting vehicle-related topics every year or two. Hopefully, our readers agree.

*A handful of us miss Chrissie Watkins, though we were barely old enough to understand the hardon that resulted from her skinny-dipping scene.

Since the first tanks rolled across the battlefield during World War I 100 years ago at the Battle of the Somme, armored crews have required specialized equipment to protect them inside their giant metal beasts. At first this often meant adopting existing head...
Tank Week | Disney Anti-Tank Instructions
We were gonna run this during Tank Week. But we forgot. *le sigh* The advent of tanks on the battlefield naturally led to the almost immediate scramble to develop infantry weapons to stop them. Some were far more effective than others. Many...

The FT-17 Renault
World War 1 was a terrible, costly, industrial-scale war. No prior war saw such slaughter. This is attributed to the emerging industrial strength of many European countries at the end of the 19th century; this large industry produced massive...
Lessons Learned…Or Not | Tanks Between World Wars
We all know that armored warfare took a huge leap from the First to the Second World War. Obviously the technology got better in terms of engine power and reliability, armament and armor, and overall design. But when war broke out in 1939 no...
Syrian Lessons on Tank Warfare
Back in 1995 I joined a Texas Army National Guard tank unit. I remember my amazement upon discovering that tankers didn’t qualify with rifles. Each tank had one rifle for the loader in case he had to dismount, but everyone else just carried...
Improvised Tanks, Young and Old
