World War 1 was a terrible, costly, industrial-scale war. No prior war saw such slaughter. This is attributed to the emerging industrial strength of many European countries at the end of the 19th century; this large industry produced massive...
TagTank Week
Years ago, Discovery started Shark Week. Sharknados aside, we have nothing against sharks. We just like tanks and AFVs better.
We’re all interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles, from the earliest incarnations of H.G. Wells’ “Land Ironclad” to the most current Main Battle Tank.
⏩ Skip the intro. Let me read the articles.
Hence, Tank Week.
We read up on the history and are interested in how tank armor holds up in Mosul, Raqqa, and Marawi. We play World of Tanks, watch movies about AFVs, and enjoy armored vehicle-related fiction, from Buettner’s Overkill to (duh) Hammer’s Slammers.
It seems only reasonable that we dedicate a week or so to armored fighting vehicle-related topics every year or two. Hopefully, our readers agree.

M1A1 Abrams MBT of the 1st Armored Division (A Company, Task Force 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team) patrols Baghdad.
*A handful of us miss Chrissie Watkins, though we were barely old enough to understand the hardon that resulted from her skinny-dipping scene.

Lessons Learned…Or Not | Tanks Between World Wars
We all know that armored warfare took a huge leap from the First to the Second World War. Obviously the technology got better in terms of engine power and reliability, armament and armor, and overall design. But when war broke out in 1939 no...
Syrian Lessons on Tank Warfare
Back in 1995 I joined a Texas Army National Guard tank unit. I remember my amazement upon discovering that tankers didn’t qualify with rifles. Each tank had one rifle for the loader in case he had to dismount, but everyone else just carried...
Improvised Tanks, Young and Old
“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.” ― H.L. Mencken, Prejudices: First Series ... and at times you want more than just a mean look and the occasional sandbag to...
WW1 Tanks: Rising from the Mud
WW1 tanks were supposed to overcome the trenches and barbed wire, and help the soldiers “going over the top.” Here is some tank history.

Screw Shark Week | Tank Week is Coming
Last Friday, July 1, marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in WWI. The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was several months long. It began with 18 (!) French and British divisions going "over the top"...
Fury: Was it Everything We Hoped it Would Be?
Over a month ago, Fury was released. I watched it just after opening weekend and again last week with a French soldier I met in Afghanistan. There’s a reason I waited before writing this followup; a real review had to capture the depth of meaning I had just witnessed....
Fury – A Real Tiger on the Set
This gets better and better. All of our minions are looking forward to this, and not just our own resident tanker.Remember, if you're into WWII history, especially armor-related stuff and Shermans in particular, you might oughta pick up a copy of this book. It's really...
Fury – A Real Tanker Movie?
We sure hell hope this doesn't suck. Kelly's Heroes is classic and there was that flick about the Russian tank in Afghanistan, but this one shows promise. A movie about armor in WWII made with modern film-making capability and a decent cast? We've got our fingers...
Fury: Finally, a Real Tanker Movie?
The Mad Duo would just like to say... Please, let this be as awesome as its potential. Please let these other guys make up for the fact that Shia's in it. Here's what Mad Duo Chris has to say about it: I wanted to be a soldier since I was a child. By the time I was in...
